Compost worms at work on National Compost Day 2023

Saturday, March 25, at Balkonton in Amsterdam, you can see (and smell) for yourself how compost worms convert GFT into super-compost. Spread across 7 different worm composter, the worms do their work. There will be a short tour every full hour after which there will be plenty of time to ask questions about the ins and outs of worm composting.

Composting yourself has many advantages: you reduce the waste stream as well as produce your own valuable compost for your plant pots or garden. More and more people recognize this and are looking for a way to easily compost themselves at home. A worm composter is then a good method, especially if you are small housed or do not have a large garden. At the same time, worm composting raises many questions: How do you do it? Doesn’t it smell? What if I go on vacation? All those questions (and more) will be answered during a visit to Balkonton’s open house.

From 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Ireen Laarakker, founder of Balkonton, will give a tour of the Worm Tank-Expo every full hour. At the farewell, you will receive a free printed copy of the booklet “Worm Composting Manual” to take home. Printed, of course, on compostable paper made from agricultural waste. There will be a worm coloring sheet and lemonade for the children. For the adults, coffee and every opportunity to ask questions. The coffee grounds, of course, go to the worms.

The Worm Bin-Expo consists of 7 different worm composter. Scattered throughout the garden and office. In addition to the familiar “stack” systems, there are also “hopper” systems, and a worm composter that works with “horizontal migration. The difference between the systems will be explained during the tour. The open house is held on the occasion of National Compost Day. During the rest of the year, a visit is always possible by appointment.
