Description
The mix with worms to improve your soil does not ship when it is about 25 degrees Celsius. It is best to scatter it immediately on the day of delivery, because it is not smart to keep those worms for a few days. If you do have to store them, it’s best to keep them between 7 and 15 degrees Celsius.
This worm mix is specially made to spruce up your soil. You can buy it in 1 kg bags, or if you buy 10 kg right away, you get a discount. The worm mix is tailor-made for soil improvement. Its purpose is to improve soil drainage and make compact soil airier through the worms’ efforts. Several species of worms are included in this mix.
What worms are in the mix?
The mix consists of 50% Eisenia Hortensis and Eisenia Fetida, which are good at processing organic matter. They stir up the top layer of soil. And then you have 50% Lumbricus terrestris, the main worms in the mix. Unfortunately, these are also a bit more expensive. The Lumbricus terrestris is a commuter: it digs deep trenches to groundwater.
How do you use the worms?
With worms, simply place in 1 or more piles on your soil. With 1 kilo, you can cover about 10 to 50 square meters. Moisten the soil a little before you lay them erp, which helps the worms dig easier. Just leave the piles, and the worms will find their own way down. Don’t put them under the ground yourself! Do it when it is at least 5 degrees Celsius, otherwise they are easy prey for birds. Otherwise, stay around for a while to chase the birds away until all the worms have dug in.
It is important to stop using fertilizer once the worms are released, as fertilizer is harmful to soil life. It is also important to ensure a healthy organic layer on the soil by, for example, returning trimmings to the garden or not collecting grass clippings during mowing.
This mix is not suitable for use in a compost bin or wormentors because some of the worms in this mix cannot survive in a small bin.
Drainage by worms: how does it work?
Installing drainage pipes in already established gardens is costly and can cause crop damage. Worms play a crucial role in promoting a permeable soil by digging tunnels both shallow and deep into the soil. This helps break up interfering layers and promotes root growth of plants and trees, making it easier for them to absorb moisture during dry periods.
Results of improved drainage usually take a season. Although some clients notice effects within a year, it may be necessary to add worms again if the desired results are not achieved.
Give nature a hand
Worms also help restore soil life and biodiversity by spreading organic matter, bacteria and fungi through their droppings. This promotes healthy and natural soil, especially when combined with a mulch layer and avoidance of fertilizer.
